This training does have a year duration during which the first six precepts must be scrupulously observed. The status of a sikkhamana is found in between the one of a samaseri and the one of a bhikkhuni.
Theravāda is a major branch of Buddhism having the the Pali canon (tipitaka) as their canonical literature, which includes the vinaya-pitaka (monastic rules), the sutta-pitaka (Buddhist sermons) and the abhidhamma-pitaka (philosophy and psychology).
