四種沙門 [si zhong sha men]—Four Kinds of Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]) — [Nomenclature]

From Abhidharmakośa (俱舍論 [ju she lun]) Chapter 15:
1. Śramaṇa of the Victorious Path (勝道沙門 [sheng dao sha men]): The Buddha (佛 [fu]) and Pratyekabuddhas (獨覺 [du jue]), who are able to awaken by themselves.
2. Śramaṇa of the Demonstrative Path (示道沙門 [shi dao sha men]): Like Śāriputra (舍利弗 [she li fu]), who preaches the Dharma and demonstrates the path.
3. Śramaṇa of the Life Path (命道沙門 [ming dao sha men]): Like Ānanda (阿難 [a nan]), who takes precepts (戒 [jie]), concentration (定 [ding]), and wisdom (慧 [hui]) as his life.
4. Śramaṇa of the Defiled Path (污道沙門 [wu dao sha men]): A bhikṣu (比丘 [bi qiu]) who has committed a grave offense. The Vinaya calls them Mahāra (摩訶羅 [mo he luo]), referring to old bhikṣus who like to steal others' possessions (those who violate precepts and improperly receive offerings from devotees).

From Yogācārabhūmi Śāstra (瑜伽論 [yu jia lun]) Chapter 29:
1. Śramaṇa of the Victorious Path (勝道沙門 [sheng dao sha men]): One who leaves home following the Buddha, capable of eradicating afflictions (煩惱 [fan nao]) and attaining the victorious path.
2. Śramaṇa of the Explanatory Path (說道沙門 [shuo dao sha men]): One who has already cut off delusions (惑 [huo]) and realized the truth (理 [li]), able to proclaim the correct Dharma (正法 [zheng fa]) and enable sentient beings to enter the Buddha's path.
3. Śramaṇa of the Ruined Path (壞道沙門 [huai dao sha men]): One who ruins the Brahma-like precepts (梵戒 [fan jie]) and practices evil dharmas.
4. Śramaṇa of the Living Path (活道沙門 [huo dao sha men]): One who can subdue afflictions (煩惱 [fan nao]), diligently cultivate good dharmas of all existences, enabling the life-root of wisdom (智慧之命根 [zhi hui zhi ming gen]) to grow; this is the same as the previous Śramaṇa of the Life Path (命道沙門 [ming dao sha men]).

[Nomenclature] See the entry for Śramaṇa (沙門 [sha men]).
