四種秘密 [si zhong mi mi]—Four Kinds of Secrets—[Categories (名數 [ming shu])] There are four kinds of secrets in the Tathagata's (如來 [ru lai]) teaching:

1. Secret of Enabling Entry (令入秘密 [ling ru mi mi]): Śrāvakas (聲聞 [sheng wen]) cling to the doctrine of emptiness (執著空法 [zhi zhe kong fa]), believing that all phenomena (法 [fa]) are empty. The Tathagata teaches the Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]) doctrine to break their attachment to this limited view of emptiness, thereby enabling them to generate superior understanding (勝解 [sheng jie]) and enter the sacred teaching.
2. Secret of Characteristics (相秘密 [xiang mi mi]): The Tathagata teaches that all phenomena are without inherent nature (無自性 [wu zi xing]), without arising or ceasing (無生無滅 [wu sheng wu mie]), thereby refuting the clinging of externalists (外道 [wai dao]) and ordinary people to characteristics (有相 [you xiang]).
3. Secret of Counteracting (對治秘密 [dui zhi mi mi]): The hidden teachings (隱密之教 [yin mi zhi jiao]) proclaimed by the Tathagata are all meant to counteract and treat the faults (過失 [guo shi]) of sentient beings (眾生 [zhong sheng]). Just as a person with an illness is given medicine according to their condition to bring them comfort.
4. Secret of Transformation (轉變秘密 [zhuan bian mi mi]): Transformation means turning the unwholesome into the wholesome. All the hidden expressions (名言 [ming yan]) of the Tathagata are intended to bring tranquility (寂靜 [ji jing]) to those with distracted minds (散亂心 [san luan xin]), to bring right view (正見 [zheng jian]) to those with inverted views (顛倒之見 [dian dao zhi jian]), and to bring purity (清淨 [qing jing]) to those afflicted by defilements (煩惱 [fan nao]).

The Abhidharma-samuccaya (阿毘達磨雜集論 [a pi da mo za ji lun]), Chapter 12, states: "There are four kinds of secrets. By these secrets, all the Tathagata's secrets in the Vaipulya (方廣 [fang guang]) section should be understood. What are the four? They are the Secret of Enabling Entry, the Secret of Characteristics, the Secret of Counteracting, and the Secret of Transformation. These four kinds, in the Mahayana, briefly encompass all the secret principles (秘密道理 [mi mi dao li]) taught by the Tathagata."
