四智印 [si zhi yin]—The Four Wisdom Seals – [Terminology] All mudras and all essential doctrines are encompassed by the Four Wisdom Seals:

1. The Great Wisdom Seal (大智印 [da zhi yin]), Sanskrit name Mahā-jñāna-mudrā, refers to the Buddha who has attained enlightenment through the five aspects.
2. The Samaya Wisdom Seal (三昧耶印 [san mei ye yin]), Sanskrit name Samaya-jñānā-mudrā, refers to the samaya forms held by various deities, such as the five-pronged vajra sword (五鈷刀 [wu gu dao]) and the lotus flower (蓮華 [lian hua]), and similar objects. It also refers to the mudras formed by the hands of various deities, and the mudras formed by the hands of practitioners.
3. The Dharma Wisdom Seal (法智印 [fa zhi yin]), Sanskrit name Dharma-jñāna-mudrā, refers to the seed syllable (種子 [zhong zi]) of the main deity. It also refers to the samadhi of the Dharma-body (法身 [fa shen]), and all sutras and dharanis (陀羅尼 [tuo luo ni]), both exoteric and esoteric.
4. The Karma Wisdom Seal (羯摩智印 [jie mo zhi yin]), Sanskrit name Karma-jñāna-mudrā, refers to the dignified actions and activities of various deities.

(See various essential texts, such as the Secret Treasury Records (秘藏記本 [mi cang ji ben])). They are also referred to as the Four Types of Mandalas (曼荼羅 [man tu luo]). "Seal" (印 [yin]) means unchangeable and definite; "Wisdom" (智 [zhi]) means decisive discernment. The Four Mandalas represent the inner virtues of the Buddha, which are unchangeable and definite, and each guards its virtue through decisive discernment, hence they are called Wisdom Seals. (See Guide to Discerning Delusions (辨惑指南 [bian huo zhi nan]), Volume 4). The Sozō Kichō (所藏記鈔 [suo cang ji chao]), Volume 3, states: "Question: What is the difference between the Four Types of Mandalas and the Four Wisdom Seals? Answer: The explanations of venerable masters vary. However, according to one interpretation, the difference lies merely in their establishment. When viewed from the perspective of perfect and complete embodiment, they are called the Four Mandalas. When viewed from the perspective of decisive and unchangeable nature, they are called the Four Wisdom Seals. Thus, in their essential nature, there is a distinction between the Four Mandalas and the Four Wisdom Seals."
