舜弦 [shùn xián] [shun xian]—
Shun (舜 [shun]) played the five-stringed zither (五弦琴 [wu xian qin]) and sang the Ode to the Southern Breeze (南風詩 [nan feng shi]), hoping that the people would live prosperous lives and the world would be at peace. This is taken from "Confucius' Family Sayings, Volume Eight, Explanation of Music" (《孔子家語 [kong zi jia yu]．卷八 [juan ba]．辯樂解 [bian le jie]》). Later, "Shun's strings" was used to express praise for the emperor's sagacious and enlightened rule, and the widespread practice of virtuous governance (德政 [de zheng]). Tang Dynasty poet Du Zhenglun's (杜正倫 [du zheng lun]) poem "Serving a Banquet at Xuanwu Gate" (〈玄武門侍宴 [xuan wu men shi yan]〉) says: "The sweet dew dries in the Yao's (堯日 [yao ri]) sun, and the warm southern breeze enters Shun's strings." It also refers to ancient and elegant music. Tang Dynasty poet Yang Juyuan's (楊巨源 [yang ju yuan]) "Offering Boundless Longevity to the Emperor on a Spring Day," Poem Two of Ten (〈春日奉獻聖壽無疆 [chun ri feng xian sheng shou wu jiang]〉詞一 [ci yi]○首之二 [shou zhi er]) says: "People are drunk meeting Yao's wine, orioles sing in response to Shun's strings."
