水葬 [shui zang]—Water burial — [Ritual (儀式 [yi shi])] One of the four types of burial (四葬 [si zang]). It involves throwing the corpse into the water to let it drift away and disperse. See the entry on burial methods (葬法 [zang fa]).

The burial method of throwing the deceased's body into the water, allowing it to sink and drift away. History of the Southern Dynasties, Volume 78, Biographies of Foreign Peoples, Part 1, Records of the Various Countries of Hainan: "For water burial, they throw [the body] into the river; for cremation (火葬 [huo zang]), they burn [the body] to ashes." Tang Dynasty, Pi Rixiu, "Five Quatrains on Visiting the Ancient Site of Guanwa Palace," number 5: "I wonder where the water burial is now? The crescent moon over the stream seems to imitate it."
