水土 [shuǐ tǔ] [shui tu]—
1. Water and soil; aquatic and terrestrial environments. Book of Rites, Suburban Sacrifices: "The contents of the bamboo and wooden dishes are the products of water and soil." Records of the Grand Historian, Biography of Mencius and Xun Qing: "First, he listed the famous mountains and great rivers of China (中國 [zhong guo]), the valleys and birds and beasts, what grows from the water and soil (所殖 [suo zhi]), and the precious things of various kinds."
2. Territory, land. Book of Han, Cao Cao's Memorial on Declining the Seal of the Minister of Works: "The water and soil are not peaceful, and treacherous villains have not been subdued. I am often ashamed and worried about being a burden to the country." Tang Dynasty, Du Fu's "The Stone Rhinoceros": "How can a strong man lift the net of heaven and restore peace to the water and soil, delaying the hurried rush?"
3. The natural environment of a place, such as climate and local conditions.
