Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraŚleṣmakṛta (श्लेष्मकृत) refers to “phlegmatic maladies”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 8), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “When Jupiter (bṛhaspati) reappears at the beginning of the constellation of Dhaniṣṭhā in the month of Māgha, the first year of the cycle of 60 years of Jupiter known as Prabhava commences. In it all creatures will be happy. In the same year there will be drought in certain places and suffering from storm and fire; the crops will be injured; phlegmatic maladies [i.e., śleṣmakṛta] will afflict mankind; nevertheless mankind will be happy. [...]”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
