By implication, the Śivahastavidhi (शिवहस्तविधि, ‘rite of the Śiva hand’) is also said to be a purificatory rite (saṃskāra). Since it contributes to the cutting of the bonds, or perhaps just because it is often the last element of the ritual sequence, it is sometimes also described as the crucial or defining part of the preliminary initiation or samaya-dīkṣā.
