誓約 [shi yue]—Covenant — [Term (術語 [shu yu])] A binding vow (誓願約束 [shi yuan yue shu]). This refers to the salvation (救濟 [jiu ji]) provided by Buddhas and Bodhisattvas (佛菩薩 [fu pu sa]).

Breach of contract, failure to abide by an agreement. Slapping the Table in Amazement, First Collection Volume 29: "Furthermore, the Zhang family (張家 [zhang jia]) only came and said something, and didn't receive anything from him. It's not considered a breach of contract (背約 [bei yue]), so why would they take it to heart?"

1. To swear an oath and make a covenant. Sanguo Zhi (Records of the Three Kingdoms), Volume 40, Shu Shu (Book of Shu), Peng Yang Zhuan (Biography of Peng Yang): "In the past, I often made vows and covenants (shìyuē) with Pang Tong (龐統 [pang tong]), hoping to follow in your footsteps and devote myself to the cause of our lord." Jiu Wudai Shi (Old History of the Five Dynasties), Volume 13, Liang Shu (Book of Liang), Wang Shifan Zhuan (Biography of Wang Shifan): "Therefore, he admonished and encouraged the soldiers, distributed generous rewards, and made a covenant (shìyuē) with them."
2. The terms stipulated during an oath.
