施無畏 [shi wu wei]—(Shī Wúwèi) — [術語 [shu yu] (Shùyǔ)] Also known as "Dispenser of Fearlessness," "Abhayanda-sattva," etc. It is an alternative name for 觀音菩薩 [guan yin pu sa] (Guānyīn Púsà). This Bodhisattva serves as a refuge for sentient beings, enabling them to be free from fear, meaning they are bestowed with fearlessness. Hence the name. The 法華經普門品 [fa hua jing pu men pin] (Fǎhuá Jīng Pǔmén Pǐn) states: "In this Saha world, he is universally referred to as the Dispenser of Fearlessness." The 楞嚴經 [leng yan jing] (Léngyán Jīng) (Book 6) states: "In countries as numerous as dust motes in the ten directions, he is all called the Dispenser of Fearlessness." The 觀音玄義記 [guan yin xuan yi ji] (Guānyīn Xuányì Jì) (Book 1) states: "This Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva is able to bestow fearlessness in times of fear, urgency, and difficulty; therefore, in this Saha world, he is universally referred to as the Dispenser of Fearlessness." Sanskrit: Abhayanda.
