尸陀林 [shi tuo lin]—Shituolin — [Place Name] Also known as Shituolin (屍陀林 [shi tuo lin]), or Sīduōpónà (尸多婆那 [shi duo po na]) (Slta-vana). Sīduō (尸多 [shi duo]) is translated as "cold" (寒 [han]), and pónà (婆那 [po na]) means "forest" (林 [lin]). The place where dead bodies (死屍 [si shi]) are abandoned is called a "cold forest" (寒林 [han lin]). Xuanying Yinyi (玄應音義 [xuan ying yin yi]) Vol. 7 states: "Shituolin, correctly pronounced Sīduōpónà, is called a 'cold forest'. This forest is deep, secluded, and cold, hence its name. It is located near Rajagriha (王舍城 [wang she cheng]), where many deceased people were sent. Today, the term Shituolin generally refers to any place where corpses are abandoned (弃屍 [qi shi]), adopting that name." Vol. 18 of the same text states: "Shituolin." The Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya Saṅghabhedavastu (有部毘奈耶雜事 [you bu pi nai ye za shi]) Vol. 14 states: "Shēnmóshènà (深摩舍那 [shen mo she na]) is a place for abandoning dead bodies; to call it Shituo is an error." It is also called the Dreadful Forest (恐畏林 [kong wei lin]), Antuolin (安陀林 [an tuo lin]), or Day-Dark Forest (晝暗林 [zhou an lin]). The Records of the Western Regions (西域記 [xi yu ji]) states that during the time of the Tathagata (如來 [ru lai]), monks (比丘 [bi qiu]) were buried in Shituolin.
尸陀林—【地名】又作屍陀林，尸多婆那 Slta－vana，尸多譯曰寒，婆那者林也。棄死屍之處是曰寒林。玄應音義七曰：「屍陀林，正音言尸多婆那，此名寒林。其林幽邃而寒，因以名也。在王舍城側，死人多送其中。今總指棄屍之處名屍陀林者，取彼名之也。」同十八曰：「尸陀林。」有部毘奈耶雜事十四曰：「深摩舍那，是棄死屍處，云尸陀者訛也。」亦名恐畏林、安陀林、晝暗林，西域記謂如來在日，葬比丘於屍陀林。
