世間 [shi jian]—The World — [Term]
The character 世 [shi] (shì) means transience (遷流 [qian liu]), destruction (破壞 [po huai]), and covering truth (覆真 [fu zhen]). The character 間 [jian] (jiān) means 'middle' (中 [zhong]). Things that fall within 世 [shi] are called . It also has the meaning of separation (間隔 [jian ge]); things in the world are individually separated, forming boundaries (界畔 [jie pan]), hence it is called , which is the same as what is called 'world' (世界 [shi jie]). Broadly, there are two types: one is the world of sentient beings (有情 [you qing]), referring to those with life (有生者 [you sheng zhe]); the second is the physical world (器 [qi]), which is the land/realm (國土 [guo tu]). The Śūraṅgama Sūtra (楞嚴經 [leng yan jing]), Chapter 4, states: "世 [shi] means transience." The Commentary on the Vijñaptimātratā-siddhi (唯識述記 [wei shi shu ji]), Volume 1, states: "What is called is named 世 [shi] because it can be destroyed (可毀壞故 [ke hui huai gu]), because there is an antidote/countermeasure (有對治故 [you dui zhi gu]), and because it hides the truth (隱真理故 [yin zhen li gu]); it is called because it falls within 世 [shi] (墮世中故 [duo shi zhong gu])." The Commentary on the Vimalakīrti Sūtra (註維摩經 [zhu wei mo jing]), Chapter on Non-duality (不二品 [bu er pin]), states: "Kumārajīva (什 [shen]) said: refers to the Three Realms (三界 [san jie])."
