識丁 [shí dīng] [shi ding]—
From the Old Book of Tang, Biography of Zhang Yanshang, Volume 129: "Now that the empire is at peace, your generation can draw a bow with the strength of two shi (石 [shi]), but it's not as good as knowing one ding (丁 [ding]) character." It's a metaphor for being literate. History of Yuan, Biography of Xu Youren, Volume 182: "If it is said that the selection is based solely on virtue and conduct, the reputation is certainly good, but I fear that they are all thick-faced and deep-hearted, focused on outward appearances, or so ignorant that they cannot recognize the ding (丁 [ding]) character."
識丁:語本《舊唐書.卷一二九.張延賞傳》:「今天下無事,汝輩挽兩石力弓,不如識一丁字。」比喻識字。《元史.卷一八二.許有壬傳》:「若曰惟德行之擇,其名固佳,恐皆厚貌深情,專意外飾,或懵不能識丁矣。」
