聖母 [shèng mǔ] [sheng mu]—
1. An honorific title for Empress Wu Zetian (武后 [wu hou]) of the Tang Dynasty.
2. An honorific title for the emperor's biological mother. Qing Hui Dian, Volume 27, Ministry of Rites, Ritual Office One: "In the eighth year of Chongde, Emperor Shizu Zhang (世祖章皇帝 [shi zu zhang huang di]) ascended the throne. He honored the Empress Consort as Empress Dowager (皇太后 [huang tai hou]) and his biological mother as Empress Dowager."
3. Catholics refer to Mary, the mother of Jesus, as the "Holy Mother". Crusaders and knightly orders revered her as their patron saint and worshiped her by reciting the Rosary (玫瑰經 [mei gui jing]).
4. In folk religion, a term for goddesses in the heavens. For example, "Celestial Holy Mother" (天上 [tian shang]).
