勝林 [sheng lin]—(Shènglín) – [Place Name] Formerly known as "祇洹 [qi huan]" (Gihvan), "祇树 [qi shu]" (Qíshù), or "祇陀林 [qi tuo lin]" (Qítuó Lín). Now called "逝多林 [shi duo lin]" (Shìduō Lín). "逝多 [shi duo]" (Shìduō) is translated as "胜 [sheng]" (shèng), meaning "victory." It is the grove of "逝多太子 [shi duo tai zi]" (Shìduō Tàizǐ), Prince Jeta. Records of the Western Regions ("西域记 [xi yu ji]" Xīyùjì), Chapter 7, states: "'逝多林 [shi duo lin]' (Shìduō Lín), in "唐言 [tang yan]" (Tángyán) (Tang language), is '胜林 [sheng lin]' (Shènglín). Formerly called '祇陀 [qi tuo]' (Qítuó), which is an error." Madhyama Agama ("中阿含经 [zhong a han jing]" Zhōng Āhán Jīng), Chapter 43, states: "The Buddha traveled to "舍卫国 [she wei guo]" (Shèwèi Guó) (Savatthi), residing in the Jeta Grove at "给孤独园 [gei gu du yuan]" (Jǐgūdú Yuán) (Anathapindika's Garden)." "梵 [fan]" (Fàn) (Sanskrit): Jetavana.
