śēṇavī (शेणवी).—m A division or distinction, or an individual of it, amongst Brahmans. They have the adhikāra or right of trikarma or one half of the appropriate ṣaṭkarma; i. e. they may observe adhyayana Sacred study, dāna Giving of alms or gifts, yājana Procuring or effecting sacrifice through another, or Officiating at sacrifice for another; whilst they are precluded from adhyāpana Teaching the sacred books, pratigraha Accepting of donations, yajana Offering sacrifice in and for one's own person. Their use of fish is amongst the original grounds of their degradation and preclusion.
