神農氏 [shén nóng shì] [shen nong shi]—
Legendary ancient emperor. It is said that Shennong invented the Lei Si (耒耜 [lei si], a type of plow) and taught the people to cultivate the five grains (五穀 [wu gu]). He also personally tasted hundreds of herbs (百草 [bai cao]) to identify their medicinal effects and treat diseases for the people. Therefore, he is regarded as the originator of agriculture and medicine, and is called "Shennong" (神農 [shen nong]). He originated from Lieshan (烈山 [lie shan]), so he is also known as "Lieshan Shi" (烈山氏 [lie shan shi]) or "Yandi" (炎帝 [yan di]). Later generations, together with Fuxi Shi (伏羲氏 [fu xi shi]) and Suiren Shi (燧人氏 [sui ren shi]), are collectively known as the "Three Sovereigns" (三皇 [san huang]).
