Source: Knowledge Traditions & Practices of India: Martial Arts Traditions: A SurveyŚastrāśrama (शस्त्राश्रम) refers to a type of training exercise in preparation of ancient Indian martial arts (dhanurveda), as defined in the 11th century Manasollāsa written by Someśvara III.—Apart from wrestling (mallayudha) there were other exercises that were recommended in order to increase physical strength as a preparation to the mastering of martial arts. Śastrāśrama was performed with various weapons.
Dhanurveda (धनुर्वेद) refers to the “knowledge of warfare” and, as an upaveda, is associated with the Ṛgveda. It contains instructions on warfare, archery and ancient Indian martial arts, dating back to the 2nd-3rd millennium BCE.
