Ṣaṣṭyabdapūrti (षष्ट्यब्दपूर्ति) refers to the “(ceremony regarding the) completion of 60th birthday” which is performed in certain Śaiva temples, according to [medieval] temple inscriptions and Śaivāgamas.—The sthalapurāna of the Śrī Amṛtaghaṭeśvara Temple (Tirukkaḍaiyūr) indicates that Śiva appeared from the liṅga to protect Mārkaṇḍeya, a young devotee doomed to die at 16 years of age, by kicking Kāla, the lord of death. The other main deity in the temple is Śiva in the form of Kālasaṃhāramūrtī. Therefore, the temple is an important worship centre for those praying for good health and long life. The ṣaṣṭiabdapūrti (completion of 60th birthday) and śatābhiṣeka (80th birthday) ritual celebrations are organized for the individual devotees in the temple premises.
