上帝 [shàng dì] [shang di]—
1. The Heavenly Emperor. From the Book of Changes (Yi Jing, 易經 [yi jing]), Yu Hexagram: "The Image says: The former kings made music to exalt virtue, and with great sincerity presented it to the Supreme God (Shangdi, ), to be associated with their ancestors." From Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chapter 11: "I am the Fire Virtue Star Lord of the South, ordered by the Supreme God (Shangdi, ) to burn your house."
2. Monarch, emperor. From the Book of Poetry (Shi Jing, 詩經 [shi jing]), Da Ya, "Dang": "Vast is the Supreme God (Shangdi, ), the ruler of the people below." Han Dynasty, Mao Heng's Commentary: "The Supreme God (Shangdi, ) is used to represent the monarch." Book of the Later Han, Volume 67, Biographies of Partisan Confiscations, Li Ying: "Recently, I heard that the Supreme God (Shangdi, ) was furious and demoted the important ministers."
