善巧 [shan qiao]—Skillful Means — [Term] A benevolent and ingenious expedient.
The Bhumisutra (佛地論 [fu de lun]), Vol. 7, states: "Because it accords with the recipient's capacity (機宜 [ji yi]), it is called skillful means."
Fahua Wenju (文句 [wen ju]), Vol. 2, states: "It reveals the subtle complexities of skillful adaptation (善權 [shan quan]) and clarifies the profound essence of meditative practice (觀行 [guan xing])."
Fahua Wenju Siji (文句私記 [wen ju si ji]), Vol. 3, end, states: "Old translations (舊譯 [jiu yi]) equated fangbian (方便 [fang bian]) with shanquan (善權 [shan quan]), whereas Tang Sanzang (唐三藏 [tang san cang]) translated it as shànqiǎo."
