Śamanacikitsa (शमनचिकित्स) refers to the “application of soothing medicaments” (used in the treatment of wounded elephants), according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 1, “on the origin of elephants”]: “[...] 8. Having performed his service to his father, the hermit Pālakāpya came out from the hermitage to the place where the elephant herd had been. Not finding it there, he searched everywhere, and so came to Campā, disturbed at heart with affection (for them), and tended the elephants in their distress by applying medicaments to soothe their wounds (vraṇa-śamanacikitsa), and in other ways. [...]”.
