Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
Source: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammarṢaḍgavac (षड्गवच्).—lit. a collection of six cows; secondarily 'a collection of six animals or quadrupeds'. The word षड्गव (ṣaḍgava) was prescribed by later grammarians as a tad-affix by means of a Vartika when they saw the word षड्गव (ṣaḍgava) used in language after the word अश्व (aśva) etc. e. g. अश्व-षड्गवम् (aśva-ṣaḍgavam); cf. प्रकृत्यर्थस्य षट्त्वे षङ्गवच् (prakṛtyarthasya ṣaṭtve ṣaṅgavac) Kas. on P. V.2.29.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
