Source: archive.org: Hindu Mathematics (History)Saraf-Eddin (1172) is the name of an Arab scholar who, in his works, included references to the “Indian number system” or “Hindu numeral notation” (with zero), which was perfected and was in use in India during the earliest centuries of the Christian era.—Mahmûd bin Qajid al-Amûnî Saraf-Eddin of Mecca wrote a treatise, entitled Fi al-handasa w’al arqam al-hindi (“On geometry and the Indian ciphers”).
