saphāī (सफाई).—f ( H from A) Polish or gloss; the brightness and smoothness produced by rubbing, planing &c. 2 fig. Clearness, neatness, elegance, free and flowing quality (of speech, composition &c.) 3 Smartness and skilfulness of action generally. 4 Reconciliation, appeased and smoothed state (i. e. removal of the hitch or roughness): clearance of accounts with: goodness or smoothness of terms with &c. 5 Used as ad Altogether, utterly, clean, clear, quite; bearing the force of such words as Outright, downright, flat, dead, smack and smooth. The connection of saphāī as adverb is mainly with verbs of loss, destruction, or damage; as sa0 buḍālōṃ; sa0 nāśa jhālā; sa0 ghara luṭalēṃ; sa0 gāṃva jaḷalā; sa0 vastrēṃ pātrēṃ nēlīṃ &c.; but it further occurs in many of the applications of the adverb sāpha q. v.
