Sandhyantara (सन्ध्यन्तर) refers to the twenty-one “contents of segments (sandhi)” according to the Nāṭyaśāstra chapter 21. These twenty-one contents give the segments their distinction. There are five kinds of segments of the plot (itivṛtta or vastu) of a dramatic play (nāṭaka) giving rise to sixty-four limbs, known collectively as the sandhyaṅga.

The twenty-one contents of segments (sandhyantara) are as follows:

  1. sāma (conciliation),
  2. bheda (dissention),
  3. pradāna (making gifts),
  4. daṇḍa (chastisement),
  5. vadha (killing),
  6. pratyutpannamatitva (presence of mind),
  7. gotraskhalita (blunder in addressing),
  8. sāhasa (rashness),
  9. bhaya (terror),
  10. dhī (imaginative fancy),
  11. māyā (deceit),
  12. krodha (anger),
  13. ojas (strength),
  14. saṃvaraṇa (concealment),
  15. bhrānti (error),
  16. avadhāraṇa (ascertainment),

Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects.
