Source: Wisdom Library: Nāṭya-śāstraSandhyantara (सन्ध्यन्तर) refers to the twenty-one “contents of segments (sandhi)” according to the Nāṭyaśāstra chapter 21. These twenty-one contents give the segments their distinction. There are five kinds of segments of the plot (itivṛtta or vastu) of a dramatic play (nāṭaka) giving rise to sixty-four limbs, known collectively as the sandhyaṅga.
The twenty-one contents of segments (sandhyantara) are as follows:
- sāma (conciliation),
- bheda (dissention),
- pradāna (making gifts),
- daṇḍa (chastisement),
- vadha (killing),
- pratyutpannamatitva (presence of mind),
- gotraskhalita (blunder in addressing),
- sāhasa (rashness),
- bhaya (terror),
- dhī (imaginative fancy),
- māyā (deceit),
- krodha (anger),
- ojas (strength),
- saṃvaraṇa (concealment),
- bhrānti (error),
- avadhāraṇa (ascertainment),
- dūta (messenger),
- lekha (letter),
- svapna (dream),
- citra (portrait),
- mada (intoxication),
Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
