Sandhiā-vel in the Gujurati language is another another name for Somavallī and Mahiṣavallī, both medicinal plants identified with Sarcostemma brevistigma (synonym of Sarcostemma acidum or leafless east-Indian vine) from the Apocynaceae or “dog-away” family of flowering plants, according to verse 3.98-99 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or Rājanighaṇṭu. The third chapter (guḍūcyādi-varga) of this book contains climbers and creepers (vīrudh). Other than the Gujurati word Sandhiā-vel, there are more synonyms identified for this plant among which eleven are in Sanskrit.
