Source: Wisdom Library: Āyurveda and botanySandhāniya (सन्धानिय) is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as “promoting the union of fractured parts”, and originally composed by Caraka in his Carakasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna IV. The name is derived from the word sandhā or saṃdhā, translating to “(intimate) union”. It is a technical term used throughout Āyurveda. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Liquorice, Madhuparṇī (Tinospora cordifolia), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa), Priyaṅgu (Aglaia roxburghiana) and Katphala (Myrica sapida). The collection of herbs named Sandhāniya is one of the fifty Mahākaṣāya.
Āyurveda (आयुर्वेद, ayurveda) is a branch of Indian science dealing with medicine, herbalism, taxology, anatomy, surgery, alchemy and related topics. Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
