三種變易生死 [san zhong bian yi sheng si]—Three kinds of transformation death (變易生死 [bian yi sheng si]) — [Terminology]
1. The subtle arising and perishing (生滅 [sheng mie]), where there is moment by moment shifting (念念遷異 [nian nian qian yi]), and the former transforms into the latter, is called transformation (變易 [bian yi]). This transformation is a form of death, thus called transformation death. This applies to both ordinary beings and sages (凡聖 [fan sheng]).
2. The Dharma-body (法身 [fa shen]) obtained through undefiled karma (無漏業 [wu lou ye]), which can manifest supernaturally without hindrance. It can transform and change, hence called transformation. Its transformation into death is called transformation death. This applies to both Mahayana and Hinayana (大小 [da xiao]) traditions.
3. The Dharma-body of true realization, which can appear and disappear freely, and can transform and change, is thus called transformation. This transformation is not death itself, but this Dharma-body has not yet transcended samsara (生死 [sheng si]), still being subject to the law of impermanence and death. Therefore, the body that undergoes transformation still experiences samsara. This is called transformation of transformation (變易變 [bian yi bian]), and it is exclusive to Mahayana (大乘 [da cheng]).
Although there are three meanings, what is explained in the Śrīmālādevī Sūtra (勝鬘經 [sheng man jing]) takes the first as its primary meaning. See Mahāyāna-artha-śāstra (大乘義章 [da cheng yi zhang]) Volume 8.
