三昧耶智 [san mei ye zhi]—Samaya-jnana—[Term] In Esoteric Buddhism (密教 [mi jiao]), it is a name for Buddha's wisdom (佛智 [fu zhi]). There are two aspects: general and specific.

1. Generally, it refers to the wisdom of the Five Buddhas. When explained, Vajrabodhi (金剛智 [jin gang zhi]) translated it as Prajñā-pāramitā-jñāna (平等性智 [ping deng xing zhi]) based on the meaning of equality. Amoghavajra (不空 [bu kong]) translated Samaya-jnana in the Prajñāpāramitā-naya-śataka (理趣經 [li qu jing]), while Vajrabodhi (金剛智 [jin gang zhi]) translated the Prajñāpāramitā-naya-śataka as Prajñā-pāramitā-jñāna (平等性智 [ping deng xing zhi]). Furthermore, Amoghavajra (不空 [bu kong]) took the meaning of original vow (本誓 [ben shi]) and translated it as vow-wisdom (誓智 [shi zhi]). This means that this wisdom, unlike in Exoteric Buddhism (顯教 [xian jiao]) where self-attainment and self-realization are not permitted, must be received from a Buddha through Abhiṣeka (灌頂 [guan ding]). This is the Buddha's original vow (本誓 [ben shi]). Amoghavajra's (不空 [bu kong]) translation of the Prajñāpāramitā-naya-śataka (理趣經 [li qu jing]) says: "Bhagavan (薄伽梵 [bao jia fan]), having achieved the supremely excellent Samaya-jnana empowered by all Tathagatas' Vajra, has already received the precious crown of Abhiṣeka (灌頂 [guan ding]) from all Tathagatas, becoming the lord of the Three Realms (三界 [san jie])." Vajrabodhi's (金剛智 [jin gang zhi]) Prajñāpāramitā-naya-śataka (理趣經 [li qu jing]) says: "Bhagavan (薄伽梵 [bao jia fan]), having wonderfully and perfectly achieved various rare and excellent merits of the Prajñā-pāramitā-jñāna (平等性智 [ping deng xing zhi]) upheld by the Tathagatas' Vajra, has already skillfully obtained the precious crown of Abhiṣeka (灌頂 [guan ding]) from all Tathagatas, the supreme Dharma King, transcending the Three Realms (三界 [san jie])." Amoghavajra's (不空 [bu kong]) commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā-naya-śataka (理趣釋 [li qu shi]) states: "Samaya-jnana is a vow (誓 [shi]), and also a Mandala (曼荼羅 [man tu luo]). Do not let future supreme victors not receive it from a master, but rather intend to receive it by themselves. Therefore, it is known that to cultivate the supreme vehicle (最上乘 [zui shang cheng]), one must receive Samaya (三昧耶 [san mei ye]) from a master before one can practice."

2. Specifically, it refers to the third of the Five Wisdoms (五智 [wu zhi]), Prajñā-pāramitā-jñāna (平等性智 [ping deng xing zhi]). The preface of the Vajraśekhara Sūtra (金剛頂經 [jin gang ding jing]) states: "The Samaya (三昧耶 [san mei ye]) of the wisdom of equality (平等智 [ping deng zhi]) of all Tathagatas."
