如荼如火 [rú tú rú huǒ] [ru tu ru huo]—
"荼 [tu] (tú)" refers to the white flowers of cogongrass. "(rú tú rú huǒ)" means as white as "荼 [tu] (tú)" and as red as fire. It originates from "國語 [guo yu].吳語 [wu yu] (Guóyǔ·Wúyǔ)" [Discourses of the States, Discourses of Wu]: "Ten thousand men formed a square formation, all wearing white garments, white flags, plain armor, and arrows with white feathers, appearing like "荼 [tu] (tú)" when viewed from afar; ... the left army was the same, all wearing red garments, red banners, red armor, and arrows with crimson feathers, appearing like fire when viewed from afar." It is used to describe a grand and mighty military appearance. Later, it also describes the intense prosperity of things or the flourishing and lively state of affairs. Qing Dynasty, Cha Shenxing's "人日武陵西郊閱武 [ren ri wu ling xi jiao yue wu] (Rén Rì Wǔlíng Xījiāo Yuèwǔ)" [Inspecting Troops on the Seventh Day of the First Lunar Month in the Western Suburbs of Wuling], poem two of two: "望中分 [wang zhong fen],鼓角鐃鐦一路聞 [gu jiao nao kai yi lu wen] (Rú tú rú huǒ wàng zhōng fēn, gǔ jiǎo náo zhēng yī lù wén)." [Like "荼 [tu] (tú)" and like fire, divided in sight, the sound of drums, horns, cymbals, and gongs is heard all along the way.] Also written as "如火如荼 [ru huo ru tu] (rú huǒ rú tú)."
