Rodhrādi (रोध्रादि) is the Sanskrit name for a group of medicinal plants, classified as being antidotal to the deranged kapha, being astringent in its properties and removing vaginal and uterine disorder, etc. It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words Rodhra (Symplocos racemosa) and ādi, translating to “first” or “commencement”. Examples of plants pertaining to this category include Rodhra, Palāśa, Aśoka, Katphala, Kadamba, Śāla and Kadalī. The collection of herbs named Rodhrādi is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
