日本佛像之始 [ri ben fu xiang zhi shi]—The Beginning of Japanese Buddhist Statues — [Story] "A Brief History of Buddhism in the Three Kingdoms (三國佛教略史 [san guo fu jiao lue shi])" states: "In the 14th year (the 14th year of Emperor Kinmei (欽明帝 [qin ming di])), a strange piece of wood drifted ashore in Kawachi Province (河州 [he zhou]) near the Chinu Sea (茅渟海 [mao ting hai]). The local people retrieved it and presented it to the emperor. The emperor ordered two Buddha statues to be made from it. This was the beginning of Buddha statue creation in Japan." (It is believed that this refers to the statue at the present-day Hōno-ji Temple (方野寺 [fang ye si]) which emits light (放光 [fang guang])).

日本佛像之始—【故事】三國佛教略史曰:「十四年(欽明帝十四年),河州茅渟海漂到奇木,土人取而獻之,帝命以造佛像二軀,是日本造佛之始。」(案即今方野寺放光之像是也)。
