rGyud bzi refers to the standard book of Tibetan medicine, which is supposed to have been adapted from a now lost Sanskrit original by the Kashmirian physician Candranandana (Candracandana) about the middle of the 8th century A.D., and which is said to have been written by none other than Kumārajīvaka, the famed contemporary of Buddha Śākyamuni.

Traditional practice of Āyurveda in ancient India dates back to at least the first millenium BC. Literature is commonly written in Sanskrit using various poetic metres.
