Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraRāśyudaya (राश्युदय) refers to the “rising of the Zodiacal signs”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 2), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “We shall now proceed to give a brief description of (the qualifications of) a jyotiṣaka. [...] He must know the Earth’s revolution round the sun and its rotation round its axis; its shape, size and the like; the latitude of a place and its complement; the nature of the hour circle; the cāra-dala-kāla [the difference between six hours and half a day], the times of the rising of the Zodiacal signs [i.e., rāśyudaya]. He must also be able to calculate time from shadow and shadow from time and to convert longitude into right ascension and right ascension into longitude”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
