Source: Wisdom Library: JainismRāmāyaṇapurāṇa is the Sanskrit name for the “Paumacariu”: the title of two Jain works, one by Vimalasūri, and the other by Svayambhū or Svayambhūdeva. The one by Vimalasūri is written in Jain Māhārāṣṭrī and is the oldest extant version, while Svayambhūdeva composed his Paumacariu in Apabhraṃśa. The Paumacariu (Sanskrit Padmacarita or Rāmāyaṇapurāṇa) represents the Jain rendering of the famous story of Rāma and Rāvaṇa.
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
