rākhaṇa (राखण).—f (rakṣaṇa S) Preserving, keeping, protecting. 2 c A person set as a guard or keeper. 3 f The wages of a person entertained to keep or guard. 4 A present (of a cocoanut &c.) made, monthly or yearly, to the tutelar deity of a village; to secure its protection from demons and evil spirits. 5 The ceremony of freeing and esta- blishing in security (through enchantments, vows, and other mummery) men, animals, fields &c. from mischief by demons, rats, locusts &c. v lāva, kara, lāga. 6 A quantity (as of an article of provision) reserved in the house, that there never may be utter lack; a reserve, a stand-by. 7 Applied (in Malwa &c.) to a woman supposed, through her exceeding ugliness and hideousness, to be able to secure the house and its females from all magic and enchantment.
