General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection IRājasoma (राजसोम) is the author of the “Naraka ko coḍhālyo” (dealing with the Cosmology of Jain Canonical literature), which is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—notes: Technical details about the structure, the divisions or the measurements of the seven hells, the names of which are not even given, are not the purpose of this poem. Rather it is staged as a personal account of sufferings (recurring term vedanā) endured several times in the hells by the narrator, so similar in this process to Mṛgāputra’s account found in Uttarādhyayanasūtra 19.
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
