缺席 [quē xí] [que xi]—
Not present when one should attend (出席 [chu xi]) or go to class (上課 [shang ke]). For example: "Someone is always absent from every meeting (開會 [kai hui])." "Three classmates (同學 [tong xue]) are absent from class today."

雀息 [què xī] [que xi]—
Holding one's tongue (噤言 [jin yan]) and holding one's breath (屏息 [ping xi]), daring not to make any sound. From "Biography of Wei Yao" (韋曜傳 [wei yao chuan]) in "Book of Wu" (吳書 [wu shu]), Volume 65 (卷六五 [juan liu wu]) of "Records of the Three Kingdoms" (三國志 [san guo zhi]): "I deeply feared my shallow understanding and obscurity, which were not fitting for the emperor's ears. Filled with fear, I held my breath like a sparrow, begging for your gracious consideration." From "Biography of Goguryeo" (高麗傳 [gao li chuan]), Volume 94 (卷九四 [juan jiu si]) of "History of the Northern Dynasties" (北史 [bei shi]): "His attendants, holding their breath like sparrows, dared not move, and then expressed their submission."
