犬馬之戀 [quǎn mǎ zhī liàn] [quan ma zhi lian]—
Dogs (狗 [gou]) and horses (馬 [ma]) are loyal to their masters and cannot bear to leave them. It is a metaphor for the loyalty of a subject (人臣 [ren chen]) to their monarch (君王 [jun wang]). Tang (唐 [tang]) Dynasty. Liu Yuxi (劉禹錫 [liu yu xi]), "Memorial of Thanks from the Prefect of Suzhou" (〈蘇州刺史謝上表 [su zhou ci shi xie shang biao]〉): "Although the grace of the two dews (兩露之恩 [liang lu zhi en]) reaches even the remote and distant, the attachment of a dog and horse considers closeness (親近 [qin jin]) an honor." Also written as "犬馬戀主 [quan ma lian zhu]".
