勸告 [quàn gào] [quan gao]—
To persuade people with reason, making them accept. From the "New Book of Tang" (《新唐書 [xin tang shu]》), Volume 121, "Biography of Cui Riyong" (《崔日用傳 [cui ri yong chuan]》): "When it was the Emperor's (帝 [di]) birthday (誕日 [dan ri]), [Cui] Riyong (日用 [ri yong]) selected twenty chapters from the 'Greater Odes' (大雅 [da ya]) and 'Lesser Odes' (小雅 [xiao ya]) of 'The Book of Odes' (《詩 [shi]》), as well as Sima Xiangru's (司馬相如 [si ma xiang ru]) 'Treatise on Feng and Shan Sacrifices' (〈封禪書 [feng chan shu]〉), and presented them. He used these to indirectly admonish (諷諭 [feng yu]) and also to advise (成事 [cheng shi]) [the Emperor] to accomplish things."
