求凰 [qiú huáng] [qiu huang]—
A metaphor for a man seeking a mate (求偶 [qiu ou]). From Liu Kezhuang's (劉克莊 [liu ke zhuang]) Ci poem (詞 [ci]), "Feng Ru Song (風入松 [feng ru song]). Can Geng Nan Ya Di Nian Zhang (殘更難睚抵年長 [can geng nan ya di nian zhang])": "I stop writing (絕筆 [jue bi]), having no 'Seeking the Phoenix' song (曲 [qu]); my infatuated heart (痴心 [chi xin]) possesses 'Soul-returning incense' (返魂香 [fan hun xiang])." From "Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio (聊齋志異 [liao zhai zhi yi])," Volume 2, "Yingning (嬰寧 [ying ning])": "He was betrothed to Miss Xiao (蕭氏 [xiao shi]), but she died young (夭 [yao]) before they could marry (未嫁 [wei jia]), so his 'seeking the phoenix' was not accomplished (未就 [wei jiu])."
