The forewings (前翅 [qian chi]) of beetles (甲蟲 [jia chong]) are thick, hard, and stiff (肥厚堅硬 [fei hou jian ying]), covering the membranous hindwings (膜質的後翅 [mo zhi de hou chi]) like a scabbard (刀鞘 [dao qiao]). They are also known as "elytra" (翅鞘 [chi qiao]).
