祇園精舍 [qi yuan jing she]—(Jetavana Vihara) — [Halls and Pagodas] — is an abbreviation for 祇陀園林 [qi tuo yuan lin] (Jeta's Grove) and 須達精舍 [xu da jing she] (Sudatta's Vihara).
The 涅槃經 [nie pan jing] (Nirvana Sutra), Chapter 29, states: "At that time, 須達長者 [xu da zhang zhe] (Sudatta the Elder) addressed 舍利弗 [she li fu] (Sariputra): 'Great Venerable One! Where outside this great city (referring to 舍衛城 [she wei cheng], Savatthi) is there land that is neither too close nor too far, abundant with springs and ponds, with good groves and trees, luxuriantly abundant with flowers and fruits, pure, quiet, and peaceful? I wish to construct a 精舍 [jing she] (vihara) there for the Buddha, the World-Honored One, and the monastic community.'
舍利弗 [she li fu] (Sariputra) replied: '祇陀 [qi tuo] (Jeta)'s (name of the prince) grove is neither too close nor too far... (text omitted)... This place is most excellent, and a vihara can be established there, and so on.'"
