He passed away (示寂 [shi ji]) in the third month of the Bingzi year, the third year of Zhenming of the Later Liang Dynasty. His death gatha said: "Maitreya (彌勒 [mi lei]), true Maitreya, has countless manifestations. Constantly appearing to people of the time, yet people of the time do not recognize him." The world believed him to be an emanation (垂迹 [chui ji]) of Cishi (慈氏 [ci shi]) [another name for Maitreya]. See Song Gaoseng Zhuan (宋僧傳 [song seng chuan]) Volume 21, and Chuan Deng Lu (傳燈錄 [chuan deng lu]) Volume 27.
