The adhik maas comes to set a link between lunar year of 345 days and 365 days of solar year. As per mythology every month had its own chief deity. This month had no chief deity so the lord Purshotam (Lord Vishnu) took the charge of leading this month and gave his own name to this month just to increase the importance of this month”.—It is defined in the glossary attached to the study dealing with Gujarat Folk tales composed by Gujarati poet Jhaverchand Meghani (1896-1947)
