Source: Shodhganga: The significance of the mūla-beras (natya)Puṟakūttu refers to a kind of dance, as defined in Cilappatikāram: an ancient epic authored by Ilango Adigal representing an important piece of Tamil literature.—S. V. Subramaniyan (translator of the Cilappatikāram) writes about the details of the dance master. Subramaniyan says that the dance master had knowledge of akakkūttu (to express by gesture and dancing) and puṟakūttu (a kind of dance), their grammatical structure and various aspects. He had an understanding of the sixteen kūttus from alliyam to koṭukkōṭṭi and their various inner divisions.
Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
