Pulaṉ or Pulam (“place, land”) is a name related to the historical geography and rulers of ancient Tamil Nadu, occuring in Sangam literature such as the Akanāṉūṟu and the Puṟanāṉūṟu.—Notes: (VIS 466-67), vaṭapulam-teṉpulam (north-south), cf. Uttarāpatha (Āryavarta), Dakṣiṇadeśa/Dakṣiṇapatha (Pargiter 1972: 257, 259), uttara-Bhārata and dakṣiṇa-Bhārata, cf. Tamiradeśa in Hathigumpha inscription. Bhārata is the traditional Jambudvīpa/Navalantaṇpoḻil (Paripāṭal 5.8, Perumpāṇāṟṟuppaṭai l. 465) or Nāvalantīvu (Maṇimēkalai 11.107, 25.11), nāval/jambu “blueberry” Syzigium jambolanum, sthalavṛkṣa of Āṉaikkā, the mythical Jambukeśvara.

Sense of the body, of five kinds, viz., cuvai, oḷi, ūṟu, ōcai, nāṟṟam சுவை, ஒளி, ஊறு, ஓசை, நாற்றம் என்னும் இந்திரிய விஷயங்கள். கண்டுகேட் டுண் டுயிர்த் துற்றறியு மைம்புலனும் [suvai, oli, uru, osai, narram ennum inthiriya vishayangal. kanduged dun duyirth thurrariyu maimbulanum] (திருக்குறள் [thirukkural], 1101).

2. Organ of sense; பொறி. புலனொடு புணரான் [pori. pulanodu punaran] (ஞானாமிர்தம் [gnanamirtham] 48, 9).

3. The organ of motor action; கரு மேந்திரியம். இருபுலனும் . . . இகழாரே [karu menthiriyam. irupulanum . . . igazhare] (ஆசாரக்கோவை [asarakkovai] 33).

A round bamboo basket (圓形竹籃 [yuan xing zhu lan]) used by beggars (乞食者 [qi shi zhe]). Yuan Dynasty (元 [yuan]). Anonymous author (無名氏 [wu ming shi]), 'Chenzhou Selling Rice' (陳州糶米 [chen zhou tiao mi]), Act II: "(Speaking) If I go there now (Singing) Perhaps he will put away the púlán (蒲藍 [pu lan]) and the dǒu (斗 [dou])." Also written as 'bó lán' (孛籃 [bei lan]).

蒲籃:乞食者所用的圓形竹籃。元.無名氏《陳州糶米》第二折:「(帶云)我如今到那裡呵(唱)敢著他收了蒲藍罷了斗。」也作「孛籃」。

pú lán: qǐ shí zhě suǒ yòng de yuán xíng zhú lán. yuán. wú míng shì < chén zhōu tiào mǐ> dì èr zhé: “ (dài yún) wǒ rú jīn dào nà lǐ hē (chàng) gǎn zhe tā shōu le pú lán bà le dòu.” yě zuò “bèi lán” .

pu lan: qi shi zhe suo yong de yuan xing zhu lan. yuan. wu ming shi < chen zhou tiao mi> di er zhe: " (dai yun) wo ru jin dao na li he (chang) gan zhe ta shou le pu lan ba le dou." ye zuo "bei lan" .
