Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationPretarāj (प्रेतराज्) refers to the “king of the ghosts”, and is used by the evil-minded Dakṣa to describe Śiva, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.2.29. Accordingly as Brahmā narrated to Nārada:—“[...] Dakṣa on hearing those words of his daughter looked at Satī cruelly and said thus to her. Dakṣa said:—‘[...] Your husband Śiva is known to the wise as inauspicious. He is not of a noble lineage. He is the king of goblins, ghosts (pretarāj) and spirits. He is excluded from Vedic rites’”
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
